Edward Jackson Bevill, 71, of Philadelphia, MO, passed away Tuesday morning, November 20, 2018 surrounded by his family at his home of 32 years in Philadelphia, MO.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Philadelphia, MO. A Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, November 23, 2018, at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra, MO.

Edward was born February 9, 1947, in Hannibal, MO, to Clemont Jackson "C.J." and Betty Jane Fagan Bevill.

He graduated from Marion County R-II High School in 1965. He played basketball and baseball 4 years. When in high school, he read every book in the school library, and continued to read thousands of books throughout his life. His ambition was to be a jet pilot!

After graduation, he attended the University of Missouri for one year. He came home and joined the Navy Reserves and started farming with his father. He spent 9 weeks at Boot Camp in Great Lakes, IL, from December 6, 1966 to February 10, 1967, and served in the Reserves until January 1, 1968.

A cute girl from Palmyra, MO, caught his eye and on November 18, 1967, he married Loretta Jane Saffarrans. They celebrated 51 years together on Sunday, November 18, 2018.

To this union 3 daughters were born: Camelia Marie, Amanda Jane and Carrie Mae.

Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters, Amanda Jane Woodward (Charles), Griggsville, IL, and Carrie Mae Tierney (Bradly), Philadelphia, MO, his sister, Sheryl Ann Bevill-Stratton, Columbia, MO, his brother, Clemont Lee Bevill, Quincy, IL, 6 grandchildren, Thad Neisen, Olathe, KS, Austin Bevill, Philadelphia, MO, Megan & Mackenzie Smith, Ewing, MO, and Payton & Garrett Woodward, Griggsville, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Camelia Smith, and infant daughters, Jennifer and twins Sherrie and Carrie Bevill.

He was owner and operator of Bevill Fertilizer with his wife, from the early 70's to 1999. He opened Bevill Express, an over-the-road trucking company in 1998. He drove cross country for 6 years and in 2005, Loretta joined him for 10 years as a team driver. He retired in 2014 because of ill health.

Ed's life was cut short, but he lived a very full life. He took pleasure in fishing, boating, hunting, snow skiing, and was a licensed pilot. One of his prize trophies was a 1400 pound, 6x6 moose. On his many trips at home and abroad, he loved to play golf and gamble.

In Spring of each year, he was the mushroom king of the community, finding 150 pounds in one day, sharing with others that were unable to hunt.

He was known for his excellent bird dogs, who retrieved over 500 quail in one season.

He raised Holstein and Black Angus cattle, because they ate 365 days a year and never took a holiday or vacation.

In his early years, he attended the Philadelphia Baptist Church and received the Perfect Attendance Award for 13 years. In later years, he was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be C.G. McPike, Jim Anderson, Kerry Abell, Randy Crabill, Jim Dresher and Troy Neisen.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Thad Neisen, Austin Bevill, Megan Smith, Mackenzie Smith, Payton Woodward and Garrett Woodward.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church or Philadelphia Cemetery.
