Obituary for Richard Lincoln Litchfield

Richard Lincoln Litchfield, 92, of Palmyra, Missouri died at 1:01 AM Friday, January 18, 2019 at his home.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Pastor Eric Anderson will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday, January 21, 2019 at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra, MO.

Richard was born February 12, 1926, in Hillsdale, Kansas to C. William and Georgia Steele Litchfield.

He graduated from Spring Hill (KS) High School in 1944 and was employed at the bomber factory (North American Aviation) helping build B25 Bombers in Kansas.

He was married to Norma C. Bernard on May 13, 1945, in Paola, Kansas. He had been courting her in his 1929 Chevy for 2 years. She survives.

Other survivors include 1 son, David Bernard Litchfield of Jefferson City, MO, 1 daughter, Nancy Lee Miller (Roy) of Palmyra, MO, 1 grandson, Scott C. Miller (Carie), great granddaughter, Morgan Riley Miller, and great grandsons, Chase Lincoln and Tyler Wayne Miller, twins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, William (Wig) Litchfield, Harold (Mutt) Litchfield, Kenneth (Doc) Litchfield and 2 half sisters.

After WWII ended, he worked at Jackson Manufacturing in Kansas City. Later, Richard and Norma moved to Paola where he worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company, for 3 years. They moved back to Kansas City, where he worked as a cabinet maker and sold insurance for America National Insurance Company.

They moved to Palmyra, MO, in September 1950, where Richard worked with his father-in-law, Wilber Bernard and his brother-in-law, Keith Bernard at Bernard's Locker. Upon Wilber's retirement in 1962, Keith and Richard assumed partnership and worked for 5 years as B and L Locker. In 1967, Richard bought out Keith's interest and operated for 5 more years as Litchfield's Locker.

He then worked as branch manager for Farmer's Coop in Palmyra for 12 years before starting his own business in 1984. Litchfield Enterprises was launched as a service rebuilding alternators, starters and generators. Dick has been working at that until October of 2018.

Richard was an active member of Palmyra United Methodist Church since 1950, serving as member and chairman of Administrative Council and Board of Trustees. He taught junior high Sunday school and also sang in the choir for many years. He served as Lay Leader of the local United Methodist district and as district Lay Leader. He was also very active in and dedicated to the Gideon ministry, serving in local and state offices.

He was past president and past lieutenant-governor of Kiwanis. He was also a member and past Master of Palmyra Masonic Lodge. He was an active supporter of youth baseball, he loved all sports.
