Mary was born December 24, 1930, in Hannibal, MO, to Clarence M. and Bertha Regina "Jean" Whalen Mangin.

Survivors include four children, Monte Sternke (Lisa) of Charleston, SC, Marla Sparks (Michael) of Palmyra, MO, Marietta Coufal of Champaign, IL, and Minette Sternke of Champaign, IL; her grandchildren, Devron Sternke (Amy), Randy Sternke (Jean), M. Christopher Sternke (Cheryl), Zach Sparks, Nathaniel Witt (Emily), Erin Reed (Shane), Seth Sparks, and Steffan Bassett; and her great grandchildren, Atticus, Scarlett, Elliot, Oliver, Theodore, Cassandra, Caleigh, Christopher, Aiden, Mackenzie, Jason, Emily, Shaun, and Payton.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Christopher Witt, and one brother, C. Maurice Mangin.

Mary attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and later graduated from Palmyra High School. She was football queen her senior year and President of the National Honor Society.

After graduating high school, she worked at the REA, where she met a young, up-and-coming attorney named Myrl. She was married to Myrl Brandt Sternke on November 2, 1955, in the rectory of St. Joseph's Parish in Palmyra, MO. He preceded her in death May 30, 2005. She worked for her husband in his law practice when needed, and also excelled at keeping and maintaining the family home.

Mary was very involved in her community. She was a member of Mildred L. Briscoe King's Daughters and Sons, Palmyra China Painters, Master Gardeners of Palmyra, and St. Joseph's Altar Society. She also enjoyed meeting with her monthly Bunco circle. Mary was a marvelous hostess, always making sure guests had something to drink and a snack so they could visit.

She was proud to have achieved her certificate as a Master Gardener, and the gardens around her home showed her skill at helping plants thrive. Mary was very active on the family farm, just east of Palmyra, helping with the cows, books, and whatever else her father needed. Mary loved the Halloween holiday and decorated her living room elaborately every year.

Mary was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church or the Palmyra Parks and Recreation Department.

Pallbearers will be Devron Sternke, Randy Sternke, Chris Sternke, Nathaniel Witt, Seth Sparks, and Atticus Sternke.

Honorary pallbearers will be Monte Sternke, Michael Sparks, Steffan Bassett, and Aaron Drebes.
