Obituary for Jerry Lee Carpenter

Jerry Lee Carpenter, 75, of Taylor, Missouri, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra, MO. Funeral services will be at 11:30 AM Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Taylor. Donna Reid and John Leeser will officiate. A private burial will be at the Carpenter Family Cemetery in Taylor. The Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Taylor. To honor Jerry, please feel free to wear flannel shirts, blue jeans and farm hats.

Jerry was born April 15, 1943, in Hannibal, MO to George S. Jr. and Betty Dickerson Carpenter.

He married Kaye Solter on June 12, 1964 at the LaGrange Presbyterian Church. She survives.

Other survivors include 2 sons, Paul Carpenter, Quincy, IL, and Mark Carpenter (Carolyn), Taylor, MO, 2 daughters, Nancy Coster (Michael), Playa Vista, CA, and Amy Carpenter (Eric Seltenrich), Manhattan Beach, CA, 1 sister, Susie Lewis, Platte Woods, MO, a special cousin, Lucille Foster, Springfield, IL, 3 grandchildren, RuthAnn Carpenter (fiance Nolan Kiehl), Taylor, MO, Jerry and Jason Carpenter, Quincy, IL, 1 grandcat, Jersey, Manhattan Beach, CA, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jerry graduated from Palmyra High School, class of 1960, and the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant.

He enjoyed farming, loved animals, and raised pigs and cows. He enjoyed farm show trips. Carpenter Farms received 3 top ten Meat Quality awards and a 10-year Production award from Niman Ranch. At one time, there were four generations of Carpenters that were active on the farm.

Jerry also enjoyed neighborhood social hours and geneology. He, along with friends, built his own home and farm buildings. He also helped friends build their homes.

He was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Taylor. He was Chairman of the Board, Chairman of Trustees and a long time Sunday school teacher. He was also chairman of the Missions fund.

During his time at Maple Lawn Nursing Home, he was awarded Most Friendly Resident at the Maple Lawn Academy Awards in 2018.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Children's Ranch and/or Maple Lawn Auxiliary.
